By connecting your professional Instagram account to ChatbotX, you can use AI Agents to automate direct messages, reply to Story Mentions, and turn post comments into leads with “Comment-to-DM” automation.

Prerequisites

Before connecting Instagram to ChatbotX, make sure these requirements are complete:

Step 1: Professional Account

Your Instagram account must be set up as a Business or Creator profile. If you are still using a personal account, follow this official guide to switch to a professional profile.

Step 2: Connect to a Facebook Page

Your Instagram account must be linked to a Facebook Page that you manage. To link them:

Open Facebook Page Manager

Go to your Facebook Page Manager.

Choose the Page

Select the Facebook Page you want to use with Instagram.

Open channel settings

Go to Settings -> Channel.

Connect Instagram

Select Instagram and click Connect Account. Follow the prompts to sign in and confirm.

Connect Instagram to ChatbotX

After the prerequisites are done, follow these steps to bring your Instagram messages into ChatbotX:

Step 1: Go to channel setup

  • Sign in to your ChatbotX dashboard.
  • Go to Settings -> Channels, find Instagram, and click Add Instagram.

Step 2: Authenticate with Meta

  • A secure Meta authentication window will appear.
  • Click Continue as [Your Name]. If you connected other pages before, click Edit Settings so the new Instagram account is included in the current permission flow.

Step 3: Select professional Instagram accounts

Meta will automatically list every professional Instagram account linked to your Facebook profile.

Choose the Instagram account

Tick the checkbox for the Business Instagram account you want to connect.

Choose the linked Facebook Page

Tick the checkbox for the linked Facebook Page.

Continue

Click Next.

Step 4: Grant permissions (“All on” rule)

For your AI Agent to read and reply to customers, ChatbotX needs the required permissions.

Turn all permissions on

Make sure every toggle is set to YES.

Check before confirming

If even one permission is disabled, AI may not see incoming messages or may not be able to reply to comments.

Finish the permission step

Click Done, then click OK.

Step 5: Activate the channel in ChatbotX

You will be redirected back to the ChatbotX dashboard.

Find the Instagram account

Locate your Instagram account in the channel list.

Connect the channel

Click Connect next to the account name.

Confirm the status

The status should switch to a green Connected badge.

Step 6: Verify and test

Open Inbox or AI Agent

Go to Inbox or AI Agent.

Start the test

Click Test Now.

Send a trial message

Send a DM to your Instagram account from another personal account. If your AI Agent replies immediately, the setup is complete.

Success!

You have now connected Instagram successfully. All incoming DMs, mentions, and Story interactions will appear in your Unified Inbox, where your team or AI Agents can handle them.

Quick Tip:

Turn on “Allow Access to Messages”: In the Instagram mobile app, go to Settings and privacy -> Messages and story replies -> Message controls, then make sure Allow Access to Messages is turned ON. This is required for third-party tools to receive your DMs.

FAQ

This is the most common setup issue. In most cases, the account does not meet one of Meta’s requirements.Check the account type
Make sure your Instagram account is set to Business or Creator. Personal accounts are not supported by the Meta API for third-party integrations.Admin permissions
You must have Admin access on the Facebook Page linked to that Instagram account. If it is already linked but still does not show up, go to Facebook Page Settings -> Linked accounts, disconnect the Instagram account, then connect it again to refresh the access token.
